Improved key bindings... Use ESDF

Postby Sharpie » Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:52 pm

I'm starting this topic for two reasons: 1. to see what other keybindings people use. 2. To make a few suggestions that might improve some people's playing... Please keep an open mind.

Here's what I use (full config at the bottom):

pr0 tip: WASD has been limiting your gameplay for years... Friends don't let friends use WASD...
That's right, I don't use WASD to move... I use ESDF. Why? Because WASD limits your pinky finger. It cramps it in unnatural positions. Most keyboards have a raised dot on the f key and it's the home position for typing... Using ESDF gives you a whole new row of keys to work with which is great for implants.

I moved use to G, and lastweapon from Q to W... Basically you just gained a new column of keys (QAZ) and all you did was shift one to the right and move the use key to a new spot. So what do we do with the newfound space? Add implant binds... (note: my mouse is a logitech G5 so I have 2 thumb buttons)

Q= Cyberdeck
A= TAC
Z= Use microphone
Mouse3 = Mediplant
Mouse 4 = Katana (for quick use... chances are if you have to use your katana, you don't want to move your fingers off of the move keys)
Mouse 5 = Thermals

Switching to ESDF may mess you up a bit at first but retraining yourself won't take very long since your hands are in the traditional typing position when you're using ESDF. Give it a try for a day or two... It's really much better.

Hmm, I use WASD with Q/F/G/mouse3 for implants (dependent on what loadout I'm using, chosen with the numpad). All my weapons are on the mouse (wheel up = primary, wheel down = secondary, button 4 = melee, button 5 = grenades). I guess if I desperately needed more keys I'd try ESDF, but I don't think there's anything else I need to be right next to the movement keys (except maybe a quick deck out button, which I use t for at the moment).

I've been thinking about changing over to esdf in honesty. But you if want a wacky config I currently use - for games I play that have a lean right & lean left movement, I reverse them so Q leans right and E leans left (Ex. CoD4).

I'm a freak so my pinky doesn't have a problem hitting control with wasd. Why stop at ESDF? Why not Open shitloads of options with TFGH?

1. The number keys get to be a bit far away. Rebinding those gets to be confusing.
2. Anyone who has done any form of typing tutor should be used to the "home row" position. When using ESDF, your left hand is in that default home row position.
3. Due to the home row position, most keyboards have raised dots on the F and J keys... It can be totally dark and you don't have to press any keys to know your hands are in the right place.

Admittedly, yes, with games that have leaning involved it does mess things up because RTY are typically for reloading and communication. They'd all have to be shifted... hmmm that just gave me an idea... I wonder if using the tiltwheel on my mouse would work (So far, I've kept neotokyo as WASD because of the leaning)

It's hard switching after you've been playing for several years and every position is muscle memory.

This. Also, my pinky has an easier time hitting ctrl from the wasd position.

Since you don't do a lot of crouching in dystopia, I have the keys like this but usually I would have crouch set as mouse 4... It's a nice position for games where crouching significantly reduces recoil...

I USE SPACEBAR TO SHOOT AND MOUSE1 TO JUMP

IT IMPROVED MY ACCURACY TENFOLD

THE REASON FOR THIS IS BECAUSE WHENEVER YOU CLICK YOU ARE MOVING YOUR MOUSE PREVENTING YOU FROM AIMING LIKE A TRUE PROFESSIONAL

I use mouse button 2 to move forward, directional key left and right for strafing, mouse scroll down to jump. Tac-scan is in mouse scroll up. Mb1 for primary and Mb3 for secondary fire. Numpad 0 does sprint, numpad 1-4 for weapons, numpad enter for use button. Ventrilo is either voice-activate or PTT in del.

And thus, I do most of my dystopia playing with the mouse, and I can mostly play without a keyboard if I don't feel like using two hands.

It requires the user to be pro, but the setup itself gives a slight pro-boost.

Ok that definitely falls under "I use some crazy other keybinding that would confuse most people"... That just made my head hurt... I'm not sure I see the point though since you'll still end up using both hands... hmmmm....

what game is it that mb2 is default for +forward? is it quake1?
I only know a few players that do this but they must've picked it up from one of those games right?

I use ADFC for movement (C is for backwards). A little variation on ASDF, but I've been doing it since Doom and it is terribly hard to change. I also use SPACE for primary weapon, S for melee, W for MP, and G for grenade; I'm so conditioned by these controls that I have difficulty now with any other FPS with more than 4 weapons. The engineer in TF2 always gets me...

that is a pretty weird way to bind movements keys...

I use WASD, Q for weapon switching. mouse 4 for crouching and mouse 3 for thermal.

i started with Arrow-keys + Numpad, then moved to mouse-centric movement (mouse2 for forward), then moved to ESDF and now stopped at WASD because I'm just lazy and don't even wanna change the default kbsettings in a game, just play it.

Woah some of your loadouts are wierd... lol...

Personally, i use WASD for movement, the q is thermals, e is use r is reload t is tac y is swt (which i rarely use) ctrl is crouch shift is sprint, space is jump, c is cyberdeck z is sound surpressors g is stealth, x is mediplant.

basically anything to the left hand side of the keyboard lol.

i have f bound to talk in game, so it doesnt fuck up my movement. and mouse 3 for vent/teamspeak.
